The article reads:
Jefferson vs Tennessee Rats.
The "Tennessee Rats" a jolly bunch of colored boys who play ball in the day time, and
give minstrel shows at night, held forth in Jefferson Monday and yesterday, demonstrating their
ability both as athletes and musicians by creditable performances in these widely diverse lines.
On the base ball field they defeated Jefferson's new city team by a score of 2 to 1 on Monday,
and 5 to 2 yesterday. Sam Tripp occupied the mound for Jefferson Monday, and pitched up to his
old form. The home team played remarkably well considering that they went right into the field
without practice. Yesterday Lefty Auckland pitched for Jefferson, and kept the visitors down to
a few scattered hits, their runs resulting largely from errors. The gate receipts for the two
days were upwards of $80.
